Happiness and Human Flourishing

(NUR1014; ENGR1711)

Happiness and Human Flourishing is the flagship course of the Headwaters Project at the University of Pittsburgh. Taught by faculty from Nursing, Engineering, History, English, and Public Health, this interdisciplinary class specifically recruits students within the applied arts and sciences. During our time together, we explore different conceptions of happiness and work to develop a capacious definition of happiness as “human flourishing.” We then then examine how various applied disciplines might be oriented toward the flourishing person. Throughout the course, we help students reflect on their own lives and how they might construct flourishing lives in college and beyond through the development of better habits. The course focuses on examining the issues using a mix of social science, philosophy, theology, literature, and film. The course has received significant interest from press and student.
